What is MMA
*As acrylic nails are very popular around the world. If you are searching for a safe and hygienic nail salon, then you better read this.
What are acrylic nails? Acrylic is formed when a liquid (monomer) and a powder (polymer) are mixed together to form a hard plastic that is similar to your existing nail. There are two types of liquid monomer used by nail salons around the world, Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) also known as "dental acrylics" or "bone cement", and Ethyl Methacrylate (EMA) which is what nail salons are supposed to be using.
In the 1970's after receiving complaints of injuries and health concerns caused by nail products containing MMA, the FDA conducted a vast investigation and found that this product will cause severe fingernail damage and deformities.
The use of MMA has been associated with adverse health affects in some people, including irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory tract. Repeated exposure resulted in drowsiness, dizzy spells and trembling of the hands.
If that's not bad enough, permanent loss of the nail plate and loss of sensation in the fingertips have also been reported. In worst case scenarios it can incur potential miscarriages, kidney lesions, liver problems, and permanent respiratory issues including cancer.
Needless to say, this chemical was deemed as poisonous by the FDA, yet despite it being banned, it is still widely present in nail salons throughout the country.
Why do some salons still use MMA?
*Because it's cheap!
MMA is much cheaper then the safer alternative EMA. As much as 75% cheaper to be exact.
It also sets much harder and stronger, which some will assume that's better, but it's not.
What to look for
*Prolonged use and exposure to MMA can cause irreversible damage to your health and nails.
Redness and Swelling
Skin sensations like tingling and numbness
Fungal and Bacterial Infections
Discoloration of the nails
As the bond to your nail bed is so strong, you risk your nail separating from the nail bed completely, if it gets caught on something.
It requires a drill to remove it asIt takes much longer to soak off and then will still need to be pried or ripped off
Look for vague descriptions of brand and products being used, like unlabeled containers and a technician who won't (or can't) tell you what they're using
Sharp, strong and unpleasant fruity odor
Excessive use of the electric file used on your natural nail, MMA only adheres to a course surface - Huge red flag! Natural nails do not require excessive filing when applying enhancements
Do your own research
*Ask questions, always!
Any salon you choose to go to, look around, if it doesn't feel right, leave!
